ON THE BRICKS

(Pending Funding)

Each year, On the Bricks stipends 12 young men and women, ages 18-24 for a three-month internship that incorporates professional and leadership development through job training, self awareness, and political education. While a third of the program curriculum is dedicated to developing practical skills for the workforce such as time management, resume writing and phone etiquette, the young people are also provided with outreach training and intense political education.

Since 2007, we have been providing these workshops in communities all over the East Bay and Alameda County’s Juvenile Justice Center once a month. For the youth that we reach through these workshops, this is their first introduction to One Fam and allows them to trust us enough to commit to joining our programming once they are released. We recruit 70% of our On the Bricks participants from our Know Your Rights workshops. Because the racial disparities in police treatment are well documented in the media, we provide workshops to young people how to assert their rights. Our interactive curriculum teaches young people to advocate for themselves when engaging with law enforcement. When young people can assert their rights, their likelihood of being detained for status offense or misdemeanors decreases.

~ Teaches youth the law and their rights within it
~ Stimulates and empowers the imagination of youth to solve problems non-violently
~ Provides necessary life skills that can be used in chaotic situations or in the workforce
~ Informs the youth and provides tools that they can inform and create healthier communities

New Year’s Movement for Justice (NYM4J)

NYM4J is a broad network of concerned community members who have come together to support the families of Oscar Grant and all the young people with him on the BART platform on New Years, 2009. A project of OneFam, we play a key role in the Oakland-based General Assembly and Community Council, and we work closely with the Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant. We are especially focused on building the Statewide Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant and building a base for longer-term, structural changes in the process.

Through a broad and powerful public education campaign on local, regional, national and international levels, New Year’s Movement for Justice strives to:

Provide all kinds of people with the information needed so that Johannes Mehserle is convicted for the murder of Oscar Grant, III.

Build public support to ensure that Johannes Mehserle, all BART police officers, and all other officials involved in the murder and cover-up are held accountable for their actions.

Provide an outlet for folks victimized by the system – and – provide much-needed education to our communities about our legal rights, from the streets to the courtroom.

Develop new leaders, ink issues, strengthen organizations and networks, and build the movement for justice for all, in the process.
