Beloved Oakland Community

One Fam is also excited to announce our plans to open, Bikes 4 Life (B4L),  a multi-use community bike shop in West Oakland. As a program of One Fam, Bikes 4 Life exposes and empowers Oakland young people to engage in biking, recycling, and healthy lifestyle habits.

The Inspiration

With more young people participating in bike riding, we saw a decrease in our members engaging in risk-taking activities and conflict. This inspired the idea of a bike shop where urban bike culture can be promoted on an ongoing basis. Bike enthusiasts would have a place to meet, work on bikes and share ideas.

Your Support

Bikes 4 Life will train and employ youth for retail, repairs, and community organizing.   But we need your help. We’re hoping that you could support our vision of creating a community bike shop by:

  1.  Signing petition we would like the support of Oakland's city officials to assist us in securing a space in West Oakland. Bikes 4 Life will be more than a center, it will be a training clearinghouse promoting and educating West Oakland youth.

  2. Donate MONEY with your financial support One Fam can hit the ground running and open our doors sooner by securing the funding to implement any renovations necessary to operate our bike shop. By showing your support, together we will provide new opportunities to those most in need and helping Bikes 4 Life continue its commitment to Oakland's youth.

ALL ARE WELCOME

Last year the bike rides were very successful. Minimal sponsorship and minimal promotion, the Peace Ride attracted hundreds of youth and sparked the enthusism of many more to bike ride.

Latest News

As of May 16, 2009 Oakland has seen 37 homicides. Last year, Oakland saw 124 before the year ended and hot weather is a breeding ground for violence. Amongst other factors, tensions between law enforcement and youth are still unresolved. While we know this is evident, One Fan believes we can make an impact by educating community members on ways to avoid altercation through alternative tactics to violence and knowing our rights for a safe and sound summer. We are offering the following trainings:

*know your rights *alternatives to violence

And are pleased to introduce the One Fam Speakers Bureau. All of our facilitators and speakers have completed over 20 hours of training on our curriculum, facilitation and public speaking.

As we ascend upon the beginning of one of our most historical court cases in the Bay Area, the Grant vs. Mehserle case, we are also offering a workshop on this most important case about excessive force, police conduct and our rights. This workshop will walk us through the timelines of the events starting New Years 2009, when Oscar Grant was shot by Johannes Mehserle through the beginning of the court case. We discuss who the players are in this movement as well as who has the ability to get Justice for Oscar Grant. More importantly, we discuss who Oscar Grant was.

Our rates are $75-$150 per workshop or speaking engagement, with exceptions for organizations that have no budgets. For more information visit <>

Private and business contributions are tax deductible. Please support grassroots efforts of fundraising.
