About

Our mission is to empower and inspire Oakland residents who’ve been involved with the criminal system and underground street economy to seek and create positive change in their lives and communities by utilizing education and Hip hop culture as a vehicle.

Values
Our core values are family, self-sustainability, and social justice.

One Fam is a intergenerational leadership development organization. One Fam aims to empower our members by providing them with opportunities to see their lives and future beyond the borders of their community and having a healthy and knowledge enriched life through personal and social change.

We have pioneered a methodology that blends the best elements of leadership development, living skills training and hands-on skill building.  Our strength-based and “hood-tested” way of working promotes public safety, self-empowerment and creates better life outcomes for Oakland’s most vulnerable citizens; youth and formerly incarcerated adults.

Many of our participants reside in Oakland’s roughest neighborhoods; 95% reside in West Oakland, East Oakland or North Oakland neighborhoods, with 5% being homeless. As such, we are the experts, and the exception, on how broken social systems are failing low-income youth of color and adults re-entering society after incarceration in Oakland.

One Fam, is an abbreviation of our core philosophy; One Family. Our core principle is to participate in our community and to create the community we envision. For many of our members that begins with the family. We strive to be “one family” that supports each other, encourages each other, educates one another and ultimately holds each other accountable to continue exploring positive personal growth.
